Woman killed after shooting at police officers from back seat of police cruiser

A woman was killed by police officers after she shot at them while being detained in a police cruiser.

The woman of Georgia, was fatally shot by police after exchanging gunfire with two officers from the back of the patrol car.

The two male officers were investigating reports of a stolen car on Thursday night, when they found the suspect in the vehicle in a parking lot across from a police station in downtown Atlanta, police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Lyon said.

The suspect was arrested and put in the back of a patrol car, which is where she pulled a gun and fired at the officers, Lyon said. The officers returned fire and hit the suspect.

The suspect, who is not being identified pending notification of relatives, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died of her wounds, according to Atlanta Police.

Police are investigating the incident and did not immediately know how many shots were fired.

Lyon said it was too early in the investigation to say definitively what happened, but he realized that sometimes the male officers don’t do a thorough body search of female suspects. Police don’t know where the suspect hid the gun.

Police found the gun in the back seat of the police car after the suspect was removed.
