A man was arrested on charges of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a girl on a crowded train because he wanted to see if he had what it takes to kill someone, police in Japan said.

Tokyo Police said that they arrested the 54-year-old unidentified man for stabbing the girl with an ice pick.

According to the police investigation, the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday. The girl was traveling on the Keio line between Kitazawa and Hachimanyama, when the attack occurred.

The 17-year-old girl told police that she was trying to sleep when she felt a sharp pain in her right thigh. She looked up and saw the suspect with the ice pick.

He fled from the train at the Hachimanyama station. The girl suffered a wound that took a week to heal, police said. The suspect of Meguro Ward, checked himself into a hospital in Setagaya, about an hour after the attack.

He possessed two knives and the ice pick used in the stabbing.

During questioning, he told police that he wanted to kill someone, but before he could, he wanted to see if I really had the guts to do so.
