A man was arrested on charges of assault after allegedly beating a young child because he complained that his brother passed gas, police in Montana said.

Yellowstone County Police said that they arrested 22-year-old Theron James Poucher of Ballantine, after being accused of beating his 11-year-old stepson.

He was charged with aggravated assault and assault on a minor. His bail was set at $15,000. The 11-year-old boy suffered bruises on the neck. A teacher noticed the boy's injuries and called the police.

Investigators learned that the child was having dinner with his family on Wednesday, and was sent to his room after being upset because his brother passed gas.

Poucher spanked the child and hit him in the face. He is also accused of pushing the boy against a wall, slamming him into a chair and choked him with his hands.

Poucher denied striking the child or pushing him against the wall. Poucher said that the boy was trying to attack him.
