Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, on Tuesday, stunned many, as he drove himself to and out of the National Assembly, without his usual security aides.
Tambuwal, who was appearing for the first time in the National Assembly for official functions since he defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC) last week, was accompanied by some of his colleagues and aides, smiling and waiving .
The
speaker drove in a black Range Rover to the complex, where he declared
opened the public hearing jointly organised by the House Committee on
Public Accounts (PAC) and Justice on a bill for an Act to repeal the
Audit Act of 1956 and re-enact the Audit Act of 2014.
In his
opening address, the Speaker said it was not enough for parliamentarians
to adhere to constitutional procedure and processes of enacting laws,
but such laws must be valid and legitimate.
Tambuwal pointed that it was their constitutional mandate to make laws for the peace and good governance of the country.
Earlier,
chairman of PAC, Honourable Solomon Adeola Olamilekan, had said the
House of Representatives was determined to pass the bill within one
month, so as to hasten the autonomy of the Office of the Auditor General
of the Federation and to provide safeguards for the country’s economy.
