Ebola: WHO Declares Senegal Ebola-Free after it recorded 42 days without a recurrence of the disease

                         

Senegal has been declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) today, October 17.

The WHO congratulated the country on its swift reaction to the threat which enabled the early containment of the disease.

Only once case of Ebola was recorded in the country after a man travelled into it by road from Guinea where he had been in contact with an Ebola patient.

The patient recovered from the disease and tested negative on September 5.

The 42 days required to declare an outbreak over have since passed leading the WHO to officially clear Senegal. Nigeria is also set to be declared Ebola-free by the international body on Monday, October 20.

The WHO has however warned that the outbreak is gaining steam in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea as the death toll for the disease is now close to 4500.
