A high-flying British banker is being quizzed by police over
the savage double killing of two prostitutes.
The 29-year-old trader believed to be working for financial
giant Merrill Lynch was arrested after detectives found the women’s bodies at
his luxury apartment.
A naked 30-year-old was found dying in the blood-soaked
living room with her neck and throat slashed and severe wounds to her buttocks.
mirror.co.uk reports that she was later pronounced dead at
the scene by murder squad
detectives in the wealthy Wan Chai area of Hong
Kong – popular with rich British expats.
The banker, believed to be from Surrey, is said to have
called police yesterday morning three times asking officers for help. He told
them “something happened” in his one-bedroomed flat.
They arrived to find a knife and cocaine at the apartment.
Officers are later said to have found pictures of a dead woman on his mobile
phone showing a bloodied head in close-up.
Eight hours after his arrest they discovered the decomposed
remains of a second woman, aged 25. She had been wrapped in a towel and stuffed
in a large black suitcase on the balcony of the 31st-floor flat. The partially decapitated
corpse was discovered under clothing with her hands and legs bound with ropes,
according to local reports last night.
Her passport – understood to be Indonesian – was recovered
from the flat. Police said the apartment in the city centre block was “covered
in blood” and that the body in the suitcase was badly decomposed.
An initial forensic investigation found she had been dead
for three to four days. Wan Siu-hung, Wan Chai assistant district commander for
crime, said: “We believe the body had been dead for quite some time.”
Officers are working on the theory that the victims – both
believed to be foreign sex workers from South East Asia or Asia – were slain
several days apart. The banker is believed to have moved to Hong Kong in the
last year following a three-year stint at his bank in London.
An online CV claims he previously worked for another leading
financial organisation. A Facebook profile reveals that the bespectacled
suspect follows a bizarre online site devoted to pretty Asian girls.
The bodies of the two victims were removed by medics wearing
surgical masks as pictures emerged of the balcony where the suitcase was kept.
Under Hong Kong law, police have 48 hours to quiz the man
before charging him or applying for an extension from a magistrate. Horrified
residents at the 40-storey city centre block – called J Residence – told how
they recently noticed an “odd smell” coming from
the apartment.
the apartment.
One man said: “There was a stink in the building like a dead
animal.
“It was a shock because you would never expect something
like this to happen in Hong Kong.”
Mr Wan claimed the gap between the discovery of bodies was
down to police following strict procedures to collect the evidence in the
living room before searching the balcony.
CCTV footage recovered from the apartments showed the latest
victim and the suspect in a lift returning to the flat around midnight. Mr Wan
said: “There was a female who was unconscious, with knife injuries and was
naked.” A small quantity of cocaine was found in the living room.
A police source said: “We are investigating whether he was
under the influence of illegal drugs at the time of the incident.”
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a
British national has been arrested in Hong Kong. We are in touch with the local
police and stand ready to provide consular assistance.”
A police spokesman later confirmed: “From what we can see of
the second body discovered, it had been
intentionally hidden.” He described the suitcase as being three foot long and one-and-a-half foot in width and height. “This body belonged to a person who has passed away for quite some time,” he said. The apartments are much sought after in Hong Kong.
intentionally hidden.” He described the suitcase as being three foot long and one-and-a-half foot in width and height. “This body belonged to a person who has passed away for quite some time,” he said. The apartments are much sought after in Hong Kong.
A middle floor 350 square foot home in the building was
rented out in October for HK$21,000 (£1,700) per month.
The area is a bustling business centre boasting an energetic
nightlife close to the Happy Valley racecourse.
It lies behind the exhibition centre where the handover from
Britain to China took place in 1997.
The gruesome case is unusual in Hong Kong, which has very
low levels of violent crime. According to police
statistics, the city of seven million saw 14 cases of homicide in the first half of the year. But the double killing is the latest in a series of blood-curdling crimes the city has seen in recent months.

A police source said the scene of the latest killings was
among the grisliest the city had seen since the so-called “milkshake murder” in
2003.
Then a high-flying American banker’s wife served him a
strawberry milkshake full of sedatives before bludgeoning him to death. Reports
in Hong Kong last night gave the name of the first victim to be killed as
25-year-old Indonesian Sumarti Ningsih.
